APEX 2019 – SITAONAIR empowers the next generation of cabin connectivity

By Yann Cabaret, VP Customer Programs

APEX Expo is the prime industry event for experts and decision-makers committed to elevating the global airline passenger experience. Since APEX began back in 1979, the event has grown in size and reputation, attracting more than 3,000 aviation professionals every year.

SITAONAIR was proud to return to APEX yet again, this time to take part in one of the event’s greatest milestones – its 40th anniversary! It was a fantastic few days of insight and meeting customers old and new. As always, it was a great opportunity for SITAONAIR to demonstrate our integrated, fast and reliable unified connectivity services, and showcase our predictions and solutions for an ‘always-on’, seamless future.

It’s clear that passenger expectations have changed a great deal over the course of the last 40 years, posing new and complex challenges for airlines. With the global fleet expected to double to 48,000 aircraft over the next 20 years and set to carry an annual 7.2 billion passengers, this isn’t going to get any easier.

As a trusted connectivity partner to the global air transport industry, SITAONAIR is poised to support our airline customers in meeting the challenges of the future with integrated, reliable, cost-effective solutions, whatever their satellite or connectivity solution.

Connecting passengers, enabling crews

At this year’s APEX Expo, we announced that All Nippon Airways (ANA) has extended its partnership with SITAONAIR, as an expert and trusted provider of best-in-class passenger connectivity onboard selected Boeing B777-300ER.

The upgrade enables ANA to provide state-of-the-art Wi-Fi service for passengers on its corporate-heavy business routes, giving them access to the seamless, reliable and secure connectivity they need to stay in touch with the office, even at 35,000 feet.

As a further demonstration of our ongoing journey to digitize airline operations, SITAONAIR also announced our work with New Caledonian airline, Aircalin, during the event.

The airline’s passengers will be able to enjoy unprecedented levels of inflight connectivity with SITAONAIR’s Internet ONAIR Wi-Fi portal over GX Aviation and, in addition to a fast and reliable connection, bring an exceptional level of personalization and interactivity – delivering a truly innovative and forward-thinking inflight connectivity experience. The offering aims to meet fast-changing and increasingly demanding passenger expectations for ‘always on’ connectivity on popular tourist routes including to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.

Crews themselves will now be fully connected with CrewTab, SITAONAIR’s powerful yet easy-to-use tablet interface which digitizes processes for a more streamlined workflow, unlocking fresh opportunities to benefit both crew and passengers.

CrewTab has already helped SITAONAIR’s existing airline customers to eradicate more than 250,000 paper forms – that’s a lot of weight when you consider the associated fuel savings.

Alongside its newly patented status, CrewTab has been evolving with industry needs, announcing several new features each quarter. Most recently, SITAONAIR has introduced ‘Child Age’, a tool which allows crews to set age range parameters in order to customize their service for young passengers – whether that be providing colouring sets or seating families closer to onboard bathrooms.

The future is ‘always-on’

At SITAONAIR, we’re seeing the demand for ‘always-on’ connectivity seeping over into other areas of commercial aviation, especially Internet of Things devices, including everything from smartwatches to connected baggage onboard aircraft. With this increase in data consumption needs, our customers are looking at how they can take the next great leap forward in mobile connectivity, in a way that’s both future-proof and cost-effective.

The future is seamless

SITAONAIR’s vision for the future of inflight mobile connectivity is already in process, with the development of Aerocel – a next-generation airborne solution, able to create multi-cellular networks onboard the aircraft. The solution allows for the creation of a completely seamless passenger experience based on 3G and 4G technology today and on 5G tomorrow.
